Enel Chile, through its renewable energy development subsidiary Enel Green Power Chile, received official authorization from the National Electricity Coordinator to begin commercial operation of its Campos del Sol photovoltaic power plant. Having passed all operating and safety tests for the system satisfactorily and with a net installed capacity of 375 MW, becomes one of the largest of its kind in the country.
"The first thing is to congratulate the team that developed this important project, which overcame several challenges, especially in times of pandemic, to build this park, which today is the largest of its kind in the country. On the other hand, receiving this authorization allows us to continue advancing in the diversification of our generation matrix, which is based solely on a mix of solar, wind, geothermal, and hydroelectric renewable sources. We continue our commitment to push for a fair energy transition in Chile, providing clean energy for the various activities the country and its inhabitants need. We strive to be a contribution and relevant actor in the process of electrification of consumption at a national level", said Fabrizio Barderi, general manager of Enel Chile.
For the construction of Campos del Sol, almost one million solar panels were installed with state-of-the-art bifacial monocrystalline photovoltaic technology, which allows for greater efficiency in capturing solar radiation, generating an average of 12% more electricity than conventional panels. Thanks to its large size and installed capacity, it is expected to produce around 1,200 GWh annually, 100% clean energy injected into the National Electric System. The latter would allow it to power approximately 512 thousand Chilean homes, avoiding the emission of around 947 thousand tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
