The National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University Completed a Course on Research Reactors and Cyclotrons Developed With the Support of Rosatom

Tomsk Polytechnic University hosted the “Train-The-Trainers” course “Research Reactors and Cyclotrons. Applications. Infrastructure, Educational Programs”, developed jointly with Rosatom Technical Academy.

The training was attended by university faculty members, scientists and representatives of national nuclear agencies from Indonesia, Ethiopia, Uzbekistan, Tunisia, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Nigeria, Turkey, Rwanda, Kazakhstan and Bolivia.

The participants studied the design features, operating principles and main applications of research reactors and cyclotrons. The course program was designed to help participants acquire and expand their knowledge in the field of non-energy applications of nuclear and radiation technologies, including the issues of educational programs development.

“Special emphasis in the training was placed on practical experience in the application of research nuclear facilities in the nuclear industry. Thus, practical classes for the trainees traditionally took place at the TPU nuclear research reactor and cyclotron. In addition, the participants visited the radiological canyon of the Tomsk Regional Oncological Dispensary and TPU research laboratories. Particular modules of the course were devoted to the possibilities of integrating research nuclear reactors and accelerators in science, education, and industry,” said Dr. Vera Verkhoturova, Director of Research and Training Centre for International Nuclear Education and Career, School of Nuclear Science & Engineering, TPU.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the organizers for such an enriching opportunity to attend the training program. The intensive classes at the university’s nuclear research reactor deepened my understanding of nuclear technology, from radiation safety and power production to cutting-edge applications of nuclear facilities in medicine. As an Assistant Professor of Physics specializing in nuclear physics, I believe this training will allow me to bring real-world insights into my classroom and inspire the next generation of nuclear scientists and engineers. It’s an honor to bring this knowledge back to Egypt, where ROSATOM is building a nuclear power plant and training the next generation of nuclear professionals”, Dr. Ramy Moustafa Mohammed Moussa, Assistant Professor at Alexandria University, shared his impressions.
