Novawind and Chukotka Government Strike Deal to Cooperate on Wind Power Projects

On June 15, 2022, NovaWind (ROSATOM’s wind power division) and the Chukotka Government signed a cooperation agreement for the construction of wind farms in the region within the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

The document was signed by NovaWind CEO Grigoriy Nazarov and Chukotka Governor Roman Kopin.

The agreement is intended to study the possibility of building wind farms in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and join efforts in preparing for the construction of wind farms with a total installed capacity of up to 30 MW and commissioning period of no later than 2027.

“The agreement signed opens up new prospects for the delivery of wind power projects. We have acquired much expertise in the construction and operation of wind farms in the southern part of our country. Wind farms in Russia's northern regions will reduce carbon footprint and make a sizeable contribution to diversification of the national energy mix given the specific geography of the region. I hope that our cooperation will be effective and facilitate regional development,” Grigoriy Nazarov said.

“Chukotka is a 100% Arctic territory. Strong winds are not rare here, while nature is fragile and needs care and attention. This is why we put great emphasis on the environmental aspect of local industrial or power projects. Chukotka has already gained some positive experience in the operation of wind and solar farms. Practice shows that this is a viable alternative, particularly in remote villages, since such energy sources cut the need for fuel deliveries and do not harm the environment. I am sure that our partnership with NovaWind will be a new step forward in delivering our sustainability development strategy in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug,” Chukotka Governor Roman Kopin commented on the event.
