In line with Summit’s commitment to continue transforming the power sector in Bangladesh by adopting advanced technology solutions, the company has successfully brought GE 9HA.01 heavy-duty gas turbine at its upcoming Summit Meghnaghat II power plant located in Meghnaghat, near Dhaka. Meeting the project timeline, the gas turbine has been successfully placed on the foundation at the site of the power plant, which is expected to be commissioned in 2022, generating the equivalent electricity needed to supply up to approximately 700,000 homes in Bangladesh.
“Bangladesh is still one of the lowest per capita consumers of electricity in the Indian subcontinent while GDP growth per capita-wise, the highest. Summit wants to support Bangladesh’s growth trajectory by providing the citizens with primary infrastructure”, emphasized Muhammed Aziz Khan, Founder Chairman of Summit Group of Companies. “We look forward to using GE’s advanced HA technology for the first time in Bangladesh to generate affordable and reliable electricity”. Summit’s Meghnaghat II project is the single largest private sector power project investment in Bangladesh.
GE’s HA technology has been recognized with two world records for efficiency in both 50 hz and 60 hz segments of the power industry. Higher efficiency levels mean that less fuel needs to be consumed and that there are fewer emissions per megawatt of electricity generated. GE’s H-class is also the fastest growing fleet of gas turbines in the world in its class. Over its lifecycle, total cost of ownership is the lowest in the industry driven by lower capex, simplified configuration, decreased fuel cost from industry-leading efficiency, and extended maintenance intervals and reduced maintenance cost for H-Class technology.

“Today, Bangladesh is actively defining new trends in the power sector aligned to its national objective to provide uninterrupted and quality Electricity to All.” said Deepesh Nanda, CEO, GE Gas Power, South Asia. “GE is proud of the long-term collaboration with the Summit Group and remains committed to offer a wide range of powering solutions that can help Bangladesh leapfrog growth barriers in its journey to become the fastest growing economy in the world.” GE has a robust installed base of gas turbines in Bangladesh that is generating approximately 3 gigawatts of electricity.
Under the turnkey EPC contract the equipment to be provided by GE for this power project include: one 9HA.01 gas turbine, one three-pressure level with reheater (RH) drum type Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG), one steam turbine, one gas turbine generator, one steam turbine generator, one condenser and associated systems, along with balance of plant (BOP) solutions. Additionally, GE will be providing maintenance and repair services for the gas turbine and generator over a period of 22 years.
More than 1,100 workers have been part of the Meghnaghat II site that is under different stages of construction works. Being mindful of the COVID-19 situation in the region, Summit and GE teams have already implemented stringent safety measures to ensure the safe arrival of the gas turbine and the execution of the project, in compliance with local, national and company regulations.
