European Energy is now building the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Nordics. With Kvosted – a 50 MW, 4-hour (200 MWh) system – we are delivering a project more than four times larger than any existing battery in Denmark and the largest in the Nordics. Similar momentum is underway in Lithuania and Latvia, with more battery stories to follow.
A renewable-energy-dominated grid needs stabilisation, and battery energy storage systems provide it
As wind and solar become the backbone of the system, batteries offer the flexibility and fast response required to keep the grid reliable.

Because electricity must be consumed the moment it is produced, this weather-driven mismatch between supply and demand pushes the system out of balance. This mismatch causes curtailment—valuable green electricity being wasted because the grid cannot absorb it. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) capture this surplus instead of letting it go to waste.
Enhancing energy security and independence
By balancing the renewable energy supply, BESS reduces the need for fossil-based backup generation and lowers reliance on imported fuels. This strengthens national energy independence and supports a more resilient, sustainable energy system.
