ScottishPower Renewables, Iberdrola Group's renewable energy subsidiary in Scotland, spearheaded the wind power revolution in Scotland when the first turbines at its Hagshaw Hill wind farm began turning in 1995. Thirty years later, the farm has been refurbished to generate five times more clean energy with fewer turbines.
Repowering is the fastest and most efficient way to increase renewable capacity and achieve Scotland's onshore wind energy targets for 2030. The original 26 turbines have been replaced by 14 more powerful models, generating over 79 MW of clean electricity: five times the previous output with just over half the towers and enough energy to power the equivalent of 57,000 homes.
ScottishPower Renewables has worked to find a solution to a common challenge in the industry. Each blade from the original turbines will be recycled by Plaswire to create new building materials, replacing concrete, wood and plastics, demonstrating that renewable energy can be circular from start to finish.
