Amazon Contracts for 100MW Wind Farm in Ohio

Amazon is adding 100MW of wind capacity in northwest Ohio to its growing list of renewable energy deals.

The technology and retail giant's Amazon Web Services last week agreed to terms with EDP Renewables for the 100MW wind farm in Paulding County, Ohio, which it says will produce about 320,000MWh/yr when the facility comes on line in May 2017. Terms and tenor for the deal were not made public.

Amazon Web Service's push to enter into power-purchase agreements (PPAs) with wind and solar projects has been guided by its goal of getting 40pc of power for its operations from renewables by 2016. The agreement with EDF sends the company past that goal, Amazon Web Services vice president of infrastructure Jerry Hunter said.

The company has contracted with Iberdrola Renewables for the 208MW Amazon Wind Farm US East in North Carolina, with Pattern Energy for the 150MW Amazon Wind Farm in Indiana and with Dominion for 80MW of solar in Virginia. The facilities will produce about 1.6mn MWh/yr, Amazon said.

Large corporations have emerged as increasingly active buyers of renewable energy under long-term, fixed-price PPAs. Some companies are attracted to the deals because of the attributes of the renewable power, particularly the renewable energy certificates, which can be used to satisfy corporate environmental goals.

Amazon Web Services did not respond to a request for comment on the treatment of RECs in the EDF deal.
