Symbio FCell Announces World First In Real Life Hydrogen Automotive Implementation

Symbio FCell today announces groundbreaking project that will result in the rollout of a fleet of 50 hybrid electric/hydrogen-powered utility vehicles, and the construction of two hydrogen filling stations in Lyon and Grenoble, in France. Tapping in a list of customers in the search of productivity and conformity of their vehicle fleets with forthcoming evolution of the gas emission regulation, Symbio FCell has conducted commercial efforts to demonstrate reliability of its Hydrogen fuel cell range-extender, dedicated to battery-based electric vehicles like Kangoo ZE.

“While we were confident hydrogen powered vehicles are now ready for large-scale deployment, based on three years of operation of our range-extender, we are delighted that our research efforts are now recognized in industry-scale, real life implementation”

The fleet of 50 hybrid electric/hydrogen-powered Renault Kangoo ZEs utility vehicle deployed in the Hyway program has been equipped with Symbio FCell’s range extender. The rollout will take place in the Rhône-Alpes region, where two hydrogen filling stations will be built— in Grenoble and in Lyon, at the early 2015 horizon.

The HyWay project received financial backing of the Rhône-Alpes regional government and the French national energy management (ADEME), as well as of the environment, development, and housing (DREAL) government agencies, and aligns with European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) objectives.

Past experimentations of such hybrid electric/hydrogen-powered vehicles, notably with French mail La Poste, has proven impressive productivity rise, together with a number of other side benefits like drastic improvement of workforce satisfaction, due to comfort of driving and vehicle affinity from drivers. For the enterprise, resource planning, brand responsibility and financials gains account amongst the largest set of benefits.

“ This set of clients is pioneering a completely new era of fleet management, hence taking a clear competitive advantage on competition with early application of forthcoming regulation of gas emission in Europe ” said Fabio Ferrari, CEO, Symbio FCell. “ While we were confident hydrogen powered vehicles are now ready for large-scale deployment, based on three years of operation of our range-extender, we are delighted that our research efforts are now recognized in industry-scale, real life implementation ” he adds.
